Letting go. Oil and acrylic, step by step

Je choisis d’abords pour traiter mon sujet une toile (40F : 100 x 81 cm) après avoir exécuté le dessin au crayon sur ma toile je me rends compte de mon erreur et je passe sur un format plus adapté à mon sujet (50P : 116 x 81 cm). Le choix du format ainsi que celui du cadrage de l’œuvre sont très important.

I choose first to treat my subject a canvas (40F: 100 x 81 cm) after having executed the drawing in pencil on my canvas I realize my error and I pass on a format more adapted to my subject (50P: 116 x 81 cm). The choice of format as well as the framing of the work are very important.

Le “Lâcher-prise” c’est le thème que je veux aborder ici. La jeunesse, le temps qui passe, la vie, la mort, la famille, l’amitié, l’amour… les choses qu’on voudrait changer mais qui nous filent entre les doigts. des fois il est plus difficile de laisser partir les choses que de s’y accrocher aveuglement. Quoi de plus évocateur que des enfants qui jouent. Lors d’un repas familiale j’ai tiré quelques photos d’un lâché de ballon elles me serviront de base pour mon sujet. Je pioche dans chaque cliché les postures qui m’intéressent pour obtenir une scène harmonieuse que j’esquisse sur une feuille blanche. J’accroche le tout sur une planche qui servira de model pour mon œuvre.

“Letting go” is the theme I want to address here. Youth, passing time, life, death, family, friendship, love … things we would like to change but that slip us through our fingers. sometimes it is more difficult to let go of things than to hang on blindly. What is more evocative than children who play. At a family meal I shot some photos of a balloon release they will serve as a basis for my subject. I choose in each shot the postures that interest me to get a harmonious scene that I sketch on a blank sheet. I hang everything on a board that will serve as a model for my work.

Je réalise des fonds à l’acrylique, donnant déjà un aperçu des valeurs et de la gamme des couleurs. Le but est de recouvrir le blanc de la toile mais également de préparer le travail à l’huile. Je travail à la brosse grossièrement et rapidement. Rien est définitif..

I paint background layers in acrylic, already giving an overview of the values and range of colors. The goal is to cover the white of the canvas but also to prepare the work with oil. I work with the brush roughly and quickly. Nothing is definitive..

Une fois l’acrylique sèche, j’attaque le ciel à l’huile, je pose d’abord mes couleurs sur la toile et ensuite j’adoucie légèrement les dégradés à l’essence de térébenthine. Je ne soigne pas trop mon dégradé étant donné que le ciel va être entrecoupé de beaucoup de choses. A l’huile toujours prendre en compte la règle du gras sur maigre.

Once the acrylic dries, I attack the sky with oil painting, I first put my colors on the canvas and then I soften lightly degradeds with gasoline turpentine. I do not care too much my gradient since the sky will be interspersed with many things. To oil always take into account the rule of fat on lean.

Je réalise maintenant les arbres, buisson par buisson, de gauche à droite en tenant compte de la profondeur

I paint now the trees, bush by bush, from left to right taking into account the depth.

Puis l’arbre.. Il est le lien entre le conscient et l’inconscient.

Then the tree.. It is the link between the conscious and the unconscious.

Puis je peins le chalet en bois.

Then I paint the wooden chalet.

Je peins maintenant l’herbe, je réalise une deuxième couche de fond à la peinture à l’huile dilué à l’essence de térébenthine par dessus l’acrylique car ce n’était pas assez homogène.

I paint the grass now, I make a second background layer with oil paint diluted with turpentine over the acrylic background layer because it was not homogeneous enough.

Une fois la couche de peinture à l’huile sèche, je trace maintenant mes herbes au pinceau fin.

Once the oil layer is dry, I now trace my herbs with a fine brush.

J’essaie de donner du mouvement à ma composition et cela même dans l’herbe.

I try to give movement to my composition and this even in the grass.

Je peins maintenant enfants par enfants en commençant par celui de droite au premier plan car il me servira à proportionner les autres.

I paint now child by child starting with the one on the right in the foreground because it will help me to proportion the others.

Je trace les ballons en plaçant seulement pour l’instant un fond uni pour chaqu’un d’entre eux, je travaillerai leur forme une fois les fonds secs.

I trace the balloons by placing only for the moment a plain background for each of them, I will work their shape once dry.

En attendant je commence a peindre les fleurs.

In the meantime I start to paint the flowers.

Une fois les fleurs terminées je peins les ballons.

Once the flowers are finished I paint the balloons.

Mon tableau est terminé, mais après réflexion je me rend compte qu’un ballon nuit à l’harmonie de l’œuvre donc je le déplace…

My painting is finished, but after reflection I realize that a balloon harms the harmony of the work so I move it …
